Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a spoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the sting of this epic fail.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you stumble upon situations so awful that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer extent of unadulterated absurdity and just throws its hands up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping strategy.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a sigh.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of confusion. You start ruminating about the nature of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck without warning, ravaging entire villages in its path. Buildings shattered like fragile toys, and the roar that followed was deafening. Thousands were left beneath rubble, their fate unknown. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to confront a future forever altered.
Rescue teams sprang into action, battling against time and treacherous conditions to find those still missing. The nations watched in horror as the full devastating power of the disaster became apparent, offering prayers to the afflicted population.
Dreadful Day Ever

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
